Black-tailed jackrabbit by Jeremy Woodhouse |
Jackrabbits spend most of the day resting in scratched-out hollows in the ground, emerging at dusk. It was late afternoon in the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas when Jeremy Woodhouse spotted this one sitting calmly beneath a mesquite tree. The beautiful back-glow highlighted its whiskers and rim-lit its body. Jackrabbits (hares) seem always on their guard, and so I knew it would be difficult to get close. He climbed out of his truck, dropped to the ground and leopard-crawled across the desert scrub, braving ticks and burrs, to get close enough.
